Dreaming with her eyes wide-open, artist Angelica Tcherassi strives to express with her designs what inspires her in daily life: Humanity, The Universe, Energy, Dreams, Resilience, The Power Within us all. “For me it is vital to transcend my artworks, as the most important part of sharing my light into the world is the message I want to get across, this is why I started this 2021 going beyond canvas and paper into new creations and collaborations with worldwide brands. Injecting good vibes into spaces and our daily lives is a choice, it’s a lifestyle,” she says.
Angelica is from Barranquilla (Colombia), a country that she’ll always have in her heart. La Arenosa, the Golden Gate city of Colombia, was the place where she grew up for the first 23 years of her life. In 2003, Barcelona became her new home, where she graduated from her Architecture & Design studies. After working with international design studios, in 2018, to create her own practice with her own name: Angelica Tcherassi, was a must for her. For Tcherassi people should be able to read the same object in several different ways, to transport their minds to a happy place, to memories, to dreams, to connect with their heart, inner child and emotions. Design and Art should go by hand in the craftsmanship of it all, evoking and provoking sentiments. Tcherassi’s work is in the true spirit of being lively, by creating scenarios and pieces that merge through values such as functionality, quality and consciousness of the world itself. She believes through art and design we can connect in more ways than just physical.
What’s your artistic background?
I am a self taught artist. Artworks describe in some way what your bare eyes don’t see, connecting with your unconscious mind. As you have probably noticed, to be an artist more than knowing how to draw to perfection is knowing who you really are and what you want to share with the world.
In my life I have dived into design and art on several different scales since the start: from architecture (2006) to interiors, to product design(2013) to artworks (2020). Perhaps with the unconscious aim to always get a little closer and more in sync with my inner self. In an evolving growth process that would allow me to find my own voice, to silence my mind and release freely who I really am. With my artworks I get to totally express what I really want to share out into the world, LIGHT.
What’s integral to the work of an artist?
An artist is not someone that wishes to copy or wants to be like anyone else. An artist is someone who is unique because he has found himself, knows truly who he is with his own shadows and lights. Respects his inner self and wants to share that with the world. His essence, his soul.
What role does the artist have in society?
Through art we can help uplift and change the world consciousness, something so badly needed these days. I have learned that at the end of the day we are all the same, seeking true love and acceptance, which is actually already inside us all and which actually we must first grant it to ourselves, we just have to tap into it. Color can help us balance our inner selves, leaving space to focus on what really matters. Art is another way of meditation or healing, you being the observer or the artist itself. For me, my art has a very clear mission to help elevate / balance our emotions and energy. Through the power of color and form while shining outwards my light and what resonates with me as an artist.
What art do you most identify with?
Abstract art, mainly because it came easily to me. It’s what naturally flows from my inner child when I decide to silence my mind, and just be.
What themes do you pursue?
To give voice to what’s unspoken. Art helps us feel and listen to our hearts while silencing the mind. The Universe, energy, love, resilience and humanity are my greatest core.
Describe a real-life situation that inspired you?
Resilience. I have great respect towards anyone that falls and uplifts himself no matter what. Above all our layers and masks there is a great source of power within us all. Learning to unlearn is key to finding our soul’s purpose and mission in life. My kids inspire me daily, their dreams, their innocence and to reconnect with my inner child. They have taught me to forget and that we decide through which color lens we get to see the world everyday.
What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
Architect, Interior Designer, Product Designer and Abstract Artist.
Why art?
It moves us all. It has the capability to open our hearts and change our consciousness. Strive for a better world.
What is an artistic outlook on life?
We are artists in our own way within our lives and within this world. I admire anyone that dares to dream. Live day by day, grant yourself the gift of looking at life with a new set of lenses, color your world. Feel your dreams with every breath. Choosing to vibrate high on a daily basis is a lifestyle.
What memorable responses have you had to your work?
The good vibes they grant to all the art and design lovers. It is something that goes beyond words. I am truly grateful for this.
What food, drink, song inspires you?
For me clouds transmit an incredible ease, flow, and knowledge to my heart. Through them I feel connected to something greater than life. They somehow help me clean my soul and mind. I always have music around me. When I feel stuck or down, I turn the volume up and just dance because we must connect with our bodies as well.
Is artistic life lonely? What do you do to counteract it?
In the creation process, sometimes I am alone, but sometimes I am painting with music and my kids around. However as an artist I do need those moments to connect with myself and silence my mind on a daily basis, just flow. Even if it’s a 15 minute meditation. However art is very social, it is done by one for the enjoyment of all. You get to meet a lot of creative people on and offline, at events, galleries or through collaborations.
What do you dislike about the art world?
I do my own thing and go with my own flow to be honest. I believe that when you put your essence, heart and soul to it sooner or later those that resonate with you will follow and support you. Regardless of your methods or backgrounds. Art is meant to MOVE to CONNECT.
What do you dislike about your work?
I love my work. I feel blessed with all of it. In all synergies and processes we learn and for that I am also thankful.
What do you like about your work?
Being able to transcend it to other mediums. For me the sky’s the limit. We have so many layers within; don’t have to be tagged into just one. I believe I was ‘Created to Create’. Possibilities are endless; the world is our canvas, show who you are. I love that!
Should art be funded?
Indeed. Art has the power to move and change human consciousness. Something so important should be funded and supported by us all. It’s a way to be in sync with our essence and share it with the world.
What is your dream project?
I am currently doing it 🙂 Transcending my artworks beyond paper and canvas. In this year I have launched several collaborations with amazing international brands worldwide from fashion to rugs, to candies to wallpapers such as: Yo2Designs, A Lot Studio x Palo Rosa and Papabubble. A special edition with ICanvas and Monomio has been released. Also 3 more New Capsule Collection collaborations will soon be unveiled. So do visit my IG @angelicatcherassi and website www.angelicatcherassi.com regularly. Don’t want to miss out!
I believe strongly in a world of abundance, support, community and following your heart. We are stronger together. We are all one. I am open to all creative opportunities. I also want to collaborate with important causes and human issues by helping give them a voice through art.
Name three artists you’d like to be compared to.
None. We are all unique. I admire all artists just for being brave enough to bare their souls. We bare our souls not to be judged or compared to, but to connect in other ways otherwise unknown.
Favourite or most inspirational place ?
Nature in all its forms. Be it at the sea, a forest or mountains, admiring the sky, in the middle of poppy fields….
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Believe in the universe. Ask and you shall receive. Life can turn in the blink of an eye for bad, but also for good. Believe to see.
Professionally, what’s your goal?
Shine my Light into the world. Engaging with more brands, companies and collaborations that resonate with my values and vision of the New World.
Future plans?
Enjoying the present. Being happy every step of the way. Life can surprise you in so many ways. Cherish the NOW. Day by day.
